Aviation Expert Predicts a Return to the 90s: Regional Aviation in Russia Will Disappear

The disappointing forecast is due to high prices for new domestic aircraft

Regional aviation in Russia is in a difficult situation, and there will be fewer and fewer flights. This was stated by Pavel Gerasimov, a former expert at the International Civil Aviation Organization.

According to him, the main fleet of aircraft for regional and local transportation consists of An-24, An-2 - also known as "Kukuruznik" and some Il models. Gerasimov believes that the development of new aircraft "Baikal" and "Ladoga" is not able to change the deplorable situation due to economic inexpediency.

No one wants to invest in new infrastructure, so there will be fewer and fewer flights. As a result, we will return to the early 90s, when regional aviation practically ceased to exist.
Pavel Gerasimov, ex-expert of the International Civil Aviation Organization

Gerasimov concluded that the only thing to count on is the preservation of the Soviet aircraft fleet and those aircraft that were purchased before 2022.
