Analysts have calculated that the outcome of a hypothetical dogfight between the American fifth-generation fighter F-35 and the Russian Su-27 depends on the distance between them.
The two aircraft are complete opposites in avionics, airframe materials, and weaponry. The American F-35 was developed for strikes against ground targets in conditions of strong enemy air defenses.
In contrast, the Su-27 interceptor fighter was created back in the USSR as a means of gaining air superiority.
If the Su-27 engages in a dogfight with the F-35, the latter will have an advantage beyond visual range, whereas otherwise, victory will go to the former.
