Fake disaster videos created by AI are on the rise on social media

The number of such videos imitating earthquakes, fires, and floods has increased by 2–6 times over the past year

The number of fake videos depicting natural disasters generated by artificial intelligence has significantly increased on social media. According to VisionLabs, the number of such videos imitating earthquakes, fires, and floods has increased by 2–6 times over the past year, depending on the scenario.

Experts attribute the rise in fakes to the accessibility of AI technologies and social media algorithms that actively distribute emotional content. Videos created using models like Runway Gen 4, Google Veo 3, and Seedance 1.0 can reach a quality of 1080p (Full HD) and require only a text description for generation. Many services offer such features for free or for a small fee.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Russia proposed introducing mandatory labeling of content created by AI.
