Taxi companies are preparing to sell used foreign cars, as a massive withdrawal of these cars from the market is expected from March. From the new year, companies will be forced to purchase only domestic cars, and old foreign cars will not be allowed to be rented out or re-registered.
According to the new law on taxi localization, only Russian-made cars will be allowed into the register. Although vehicles that already have a permit until 2026 can continue to operate, market participants assume that when the owner changes, their permit will be canceled, and it will be impossible to obtain a new one.
Most urban taxi fleets operate on a car rental model for drivers. If previously many drivers worked as self-employed, now they are switching to individual entrepreneurs, which is more profitable. However, according to the taxi law (Federal Law-580), when a car is rented to an individual entrepreneur, it must be re-registered in the transport register with a new permit. From March, this procedure will become unavailable for foreign cars. In this regard, carriers are forced to sell such cars and cease operations.
