Developed in the late 1950s, the Soviet heavy tank "Object 279" shocked the world with its cunning design. The features of the "Titan of the Apocalypse" were named by the "Uralvagonzavod" concern (part of Rostec).
The company noted that "Object 279" is not just a machine, but a real triumph of scientists from "VNIITransmash".
Four tracks, a "flying wing" hull - no one has ever built anything like this! A masterpiece that defined the face of Soviet armored vehicles.
The concern emphasized that Object 279, built during the Cold War, was designed to perform tasks in the epicenter of a nuclear strike. The tank received armor that dampens the shock wave, which was considered an important technological breakthrough. The heavy vehicle with four tracks could confidently move through rough terrain, swamps and piles of debris.
"Object 279" was built in 1959. The vehicle, weighing 59.2 tons, was armed with a large-caliber machine gun, a rifled M65 cannon with a caliber of 130 mm.
The unusual shape of the hull made it possible to achieve a record small protected volume, which amounted to 11.4 cubic meters. The car can be seen in the technical center of the "Patriot" park in Kubinka.
