An innovative method aimed at preventing train derailments has been developed at the Irkutsk State Transport University (IrGUPS).
Lyubov Martynenko, a lecturer at the Department of "Carriages and Carriage Facilities," has created an analysis system that helps identify the causes of accidents during rolling stock movement. The methodology is based on the assessment of various safety indicators.
The main feature of the new approach is that it allows determining the probability of train derailment even in cases where individual elements of the "locomotive-carriage-track" system meet the standards. Even if there are deviations that do not become grounds for stopping movement according to current instructions, potential risks can be identified.
Previously, there were only methods that determined the causes of train derailment by external signs, such as cracks or fractures, as well as by violations in the mode of movement. The new methodology significantly expands the possibilities of analysis.
Accident situations often occur on turns, where the driver is forced to reduce the speed of the locomotive. At such moments, the wheels of the train and the rails are subjected to increased loads. This creates a risk that weak points in the technical condition of both the train and the tracks can lead to train derailment.
