New light multi-purpose Mi-34 helicopter to replace Western Airbus and Bell

The rotorcraft will receive a VK-650V engine

Russia will produce a light multi-purpose Mi-34 helicopter with a VK-650V engine. This was announced by the head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, at a meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

According to the CEO of the state corporation, there will be many buyers for the Mi-34. Chemezov explained that consumers are waiting for a Russian helicopter.

This is a new single-engine helicopter, the demand for it will be high, because today both Airbus and Bell, we have quite a lot of these helicopters today. Their maintenance has been practically suspended.

The Mi-34 was developed as a light training and sports helicopter. The prototype made its first flight in 1986. After the collapse of the USSR, the project was frozen.

Then, in the 2000s, the «Russian Helicopters» holding company took up the Mi-34. The Mi-34S1 modification was made. In 2012, the project was closed again.

  • Length — 8.8 m (excluding rotors)
  • Height — 2.75 m
  • Maximum take-off weight — 1450 kg
  • Speed — 200 km/h
  • Practical ceiling of altitude — 4000 m
  • Flight range — 349 km.
