New insulation monitoring device for uninterruptible power supply systems developed by MEPhI students

Young engineers have created a device that improves the safety of electrical networks

Students from the Technological Institute of MEPhI in Lesnoy have developed an insulation monitoring device (IMD) for Voltag, a company specializing in uninterruptible power supply systems. The device monitors the insulation of wires and automatically shuts off equipment when faults are detected.

The work began with mathematical modeling. Then the students prepared technical documentation, including the device passport and operating instructions. After that, they assembled a prototype, placing the components on a board.

Project participants — Dmitry Postnikov, Alexandra Deryabina, Nikita Baklanenko, and Roman Sokolov — noted that the work required in-depth knowledge and a creative approach. The developed IMD transmits data in real time, which simplifies network monitoring.

Our institute started engaging in research and development work back in October last year. During this time, we have successfully completed two projects. At first, it seemed difficult, but that fueled my interest because, in addition to studying, I wanted to apply my knowledge in practice, and since such an opportunity arose, I gave it my all. Sometimes I even stayed at the institute until 11 pm! As you work, you start to understand what needs to be done.

The collaboration between the university and the enterprise shows how student projects can influence industry. Students gain practical experience, and companies gain innovative solutions.
