Square-piston engine assembled by Russian bloggers

The engine was started and torque was transmitted to the wheels

The Garage 54 YouTube channel from Novosibirsk has once again attracted public attention with its innovative project: they have designed an engine in which the pistons and cylinders are square.

To achieve high precision in the machining of the combustion chamber, the team resorted to using electrical discharge machining equipment. To ensure trouble-free operation when heated, the pistons were made with a slight taper, and rubber rings were used to ensure tightness, since traditional compression rings are not able to work effectively in angular surfaces.

Insufficient compression prevented the engine from starting on the first try. After improvements, including grinding and sealing, the engine started and even transmitted torque to the wheels, but with heavy smoke, tire overheating and piston wear. The experiment, although useless, clearly showed why cylinders are made round: the square shape creates stress concentration, impairs heat dissipation and sealing.
