AvtoVAZ explained why there are no convertible cars in its model range. The company's product director, Oleg Grunenkov, stated that the main reasons are the high cost of producing such cars and low demand.
We have made several attempts to produce cars in a convertible body, made concepts, took them to exhibitions, studied this issue, but we cannot find a certain number of buyers to sell such cars at least 5-10 thousand per year. Because the level of development is very high, the changes in the body are very colossal, especially considering the rigidity. Plus, you need to design a new interior, some kind of folding roof. In general, this is not a very economically justified story.
In the history of AvtoVAZ, there was only one mass-produced car in a convertible body - the Lada Natasha. The model was mainly focused on export markets. The car was created on the basis of VAZ 2108. It was produced from 1990 to 1995. During this period, only about 450 copies rolled off the assembly line.
Earlier www1.ru reported that AvtoVAZ plans to produce 20–30 thousand Lada Iskra cars in 2025.
