Russian car manufacturer UAZ is actively exploring opportunities to enter the Latin American market. As part of this process, a tour of the UAZ plant was conducted for Russian trade representatives from Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Cuba. They were shown the production facilities and told about the prospects for expanding the model range.
The head of the Latin American Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Alexander Shchetinin, said that Russia is interested in increasing car production in Latin America. In April, assembly of Patriot SUVs began in Cuba, but the expected sales volume - only 350-500 cars per year - is not impressive.
At the same time, the possibilities of organizing car assembly in Nicaragua and Venezuela are being considered. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Alexey Gruzdev said that these countries are already in negotiations to sign specific economic contracts. It is planned to send trial batches of diesel models to potential buyers in Nicaragua.
Venezuela is also showing interest in the production of Russian cars. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country, Ivan Gil Pinto, expressed confidence in the possibility of establishing such production. Ecuador, according to the ambassador to Russia, Juan Fernando Olguin Flores, is also interested in allowing Russian cars to enter its market, where they may be more in demand due to favorable climatic conditions.
However, exporting cars to Latin America involves certain risks. Although a low price may attract consumers, the market already has budget offers from Chinese manufacturers and large assembly plants, such as Volkswagen in Brazil. In addition, a significant part of the cost of a car is related to logistics: delivery of finished cars or kits from Russia can cost 6,000 US dollars per container, which calls into question the financial feasibility of projects without state support.
