According to SIPRI, as of January 2025, there were 12,241 nuclear warheads in the world, 9,614 were in storage for potential use. Another 3,912 were installed on missiles and aircraft. The remaining 2,100 were in a state of high combat readiness.

The era of nuclear weapons reduction in the world, which has lasted since the end of the Cold War, is coming to an end.
Hans Kristensen, SIPRI Senior Researcher

The authors claim that Russia and the United States account for about 90% of all nuclear weapons. The United States has 5,177 warheads, and the Russian Federation has 5,459. At the same time, SIPRI notes that the American nuclear arsenal modernization program has faced problems due to lack of funding.

The number of warheads in other countries according to SIPRI estimates:

  • China — about 600
  • United Kingdom — 225
  • France — 290
  • India — 180
  • North Korea — 50
  • Israel — 90
