In the history of Soviet aviation, a special place is occupied by the first mass-produced aircraft engine M-11 — a development that became an important stage on the path to technological independence and the mass development of domestic aviation. The engine not only ensured the reliable operation of training and light aircraft, but also laid the foundation for further achievements in aircraft construction in the USSR. We tell you why the M-11 is considered a key element of Soviet aviation history.
The first mass-produced Soviet aircraft engine M-11 was developed in the 1920s by the design bureau of State Aviation Plant No. 4 (Motor) under the leadership of Shvetsov. The engine had five cylinders, air cooling and a power of about 100 horsepower. The designers created it specifically for training aircraft.
The M-11 became the first domestic aircraft engine that was successfully put into mass production in 1929. This event was an important step in the development of the Soviet aviation industry. The engine was distinguished by high reliability, manufacturability and unpretentiousness to the quality of fuel and oils, which was critical for the conditions of that time. In the process of production and operation, the design was constantly improved: the engine life increased from 200 hours in 1932 to 400 hours by 1936.
With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in 1941, the U-2, equipped with the M-11 engine, began to be used at the front as a communications aircraft and a light night bomber. In addition, the engine was installed on the Yak-6 transport bomber.
The creation of the M-11 was the result of the joint work of designers from the Moscow Motor Plant and the Motor-Building Plant No. 29. The engine played a key role in supporting Soviet aviation during the war, ensuring reliability and efficiency in difficult combat conditions.
