Footage has emerged online showing a low-altitude flight of a Russian air-launched strategic air-to-surface missile, the X-101, for Tu-160 and Tu-95MS bomber carriers.
The time and location of the video are unknown. The footage may show a modernized version of the X-101 with an improved optoelectronic guidance system, which began to be used in November 2023 and is called "Product 504AP."
Russian military personnel sometimes use the X-101 as bait to deplete the missile arsenal of air defense systems. These missiles "pave the way" for subsequent strikes by Iskander or Kalibr missiles.
Preliminary characteristics of the X-101:
- Length — 7.45 m
- Launch weight — up to 2400 kg
- Accuracy (circular error probable) — up to 20 m
- Maximum range — 5500 km
