Russia's easily accessible oil reserves are dwindling, so new technologies are needed to develop hard-to-reach fields. One promising method is directional wells with cable rod pumps. However, traditional rods cannot withstand loads and often break.
Scientists from Perm Polytechnic University have improved the design of the cable rod. They have developed a special metal retainer in the form of a spiral, which is attached to the lower part of the rod. This solution prevents the cable from bending and maintains its integrity in places where it is subjected to increased loads and can accumulate defects. At the same time, the design does not become more complex or expensive.
The retainer is a metal spiral made of corrosion-resistant steel, such as grade 20X13, which increases the rigidity of the part in the area near the lower seal, thereby preventing its failure. The retainer has the opposite direction of twist compared to the cable, which allows for even load distribution.
Polytechnic scientists claim that the spiral is fixed by tension, screws, or welding. It can be installed without special equipment, even on a finished rod.
The size and distance between the turns of the fixing device depend on the diameter of the cable. This allows the spiral to be installed on the cable, partially overlapping it and rotating it along the cable, said Anna Ivanchenko, senior lecturer at the Department of Mining Electromechanics of PNRPU. This installation method allows increasing the rigidity of an already used cable rod.
Russian scientists have proposed a simple but effective solution that will increase the service life of cable pumping rods in directional wells. This will reduce maintenance costs and increase production profitability.
Earlier, Perm scientists developed an innovative system for monitoring and analyzing the trajectory of horizontal wells using telemetry data. It functions accurately and reliably in wells up to 20 cm in diameter and 3–4 km deep. The coordinates of the bottomhole are entered into it, and a route to the target is developed, taking into account key points.
