Rosatom Doesn't Know What to Do with US Fuel at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: Ready to Return, But There Are Nuances

American fuel is in four of the six reactors of the Zaporizhzhia NPP

Rosatom has not yet decided how to technologically handle the American fuel in the reactors of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The head of the state corporation, Alexey Likhachev, noted his readiness to return the fuel to the United States, but a political decision is necessary.

Currently, four of the six reactors of the Zaporizhzhia NPP contain assemblies from the USA - fuel from the American company Westinghouse.

Actually, we don't need it, but organizational and legal issues arise. Obviously, certain consultations will be required here. The time for them has not come, a political decision is needed. We are ready to return it.
Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom

According to him, Rosatom returns its own spent fuel to the nuclear cycle and reprocesses it. But what to do with the American one is not yet fully technologically clear.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP with a capacity of 6 GW is the largest in Europe.
