Military Expert Korotchenko: Updated ZU-23 Will Be Effective Against UAV Attacks Thanks to Laser Rangefinder

The modernized ZU-23 anti-aircraft gun may become an effective means of combating kamikaze drone attacks on Russian energy facilities. This opinion about the new model of the installation was expressed by the editor-in-chief of the magazine "National Defense" Igor Korotchenko.

The 23-millimeter anti-aircraft gun was adopted into service back in 1960. It consists of two paired 2A14 automatic cannons.

According to Korotchenko, the troops need to modernize the time-tested ZU-23 by equipping them with modern means of detecting and tracking targets, remote control, and a programmable detonation system for anti-aircraft ammunition.

The refinement of the ZU-23 by installing an optoelectronic unit with television and thermal imaging cameras allows for reconnaissance of the air situation at any time of the day. A laser rangefinder determines the distance to the target, and tracking is carried out by an automatic target tracking system.
