The appearance of the Russian intelligence ship "Viktor Leonov" of Project 864 was recorded in the Irish Sea. This was reported by the Irish Naval Service.
The Irish military tried to contact "Viktor Leonov" to clarify its intentions in the area. At the same time, the ship's crew did not respond, although they confirmed receipt of the message sent to them.
It is emphasized that the Russian vessel did not violate any maritime laws. The Irish side was concerned about suggestions that the ship was allegedly mapping Irish underwater infrastructure and data cables.
The medium reconnaissance ship "Viktor Leonov" is the seventh in the Project 864 series, and joined the fleet in 1988.
It was built under the name "Odograph" at the shipyard of the Stocznia Północna im Bohaterow Westerplatte shipbuilding plant in Gdańsk, Poland. It was originally part of the Black Sea Fleet. In 1995, it was transferred to the Northern Fleet. The lead ship of the series is the medium reconnaissance ship "Meridian", which was renamed "Admiral Fedor Golovin" in April 2007.
The ship's armament consists of only two six-barreled AK-630M artillery mounts (30-mm), two Igla MANPADS launchers - four missiles each.
"Viktor Leonov" is equipped with technology that allows it to intercept radar, radio and other electronic signals, and is also capable of conducting underwater monitoring operations.
Earlier www1.ru reported that a Russian Su-34 fighter successfully landed with a cockpit canopy that burst at an altitude of 10 km.
