The flights involved crews of Su-24M, Su-30SM, Su-33 aircraft and an Il-78 tanker aircraft of the long-range aviation of the Aerospace Forces of Russia.

Refueling flights are carried out at altitudes up to 5,000 meters at a speed of 500-600 km/h. The pilot must approach the aerial tanker at a distance of 10-15 meters and use the extended boom to make contact with the tanker's cone-sensor, and then maintain position in formation until refueling is complete.

Pilots of the Northern Fleet practiced refueling flights during daylight and nighttime. In total, more than 20 flight crews took part in the training.
