The Russian Su-30SM2 fighter intercepted a MiG-29A in the sky with an R-37M air-to-air missile of extra-long range, launched from a distance of 180 to 210 km. This was reported by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, the target was detected by the onboard radar system (RLK) "Irbis-E".
It is noteworthy that the crew of the Su-30SM2 was able to successfully intercept and listen to the communication channel of the MiG-29A pilot without any decryption. This may be due to the use of the standard R-862M Zhuravl-30M radio station without modern AES-256 encryption algorithms by the latter.
The analyst suggested that at the time of the interception, the MiG-29A was approaching the line of use of GBU-39 gliding aerial bombs or AGM-88B Block 3 anti-radar missiles against the radar systems of Buk-M3, Tor-M2, or Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft systems.
About the R-37M missile:
R-37M is a long-range air-to-air missile system designed to engage both ground and air targets. The maximum flight speed of the missile is six times the speed of sound, that is, it is actually hypersonic.
