At least one of the eight A-50U airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) has returned to combat duty in a missile-dangerous direction after a long break. This was reported by military analyst Evgeny Damantsev, citing sources.
According to him, the combat vehicle is patrolling outside the radius of all anti-aircraft missile systems (SAMs) recorded and identified by Russian electronic intelligence, at a distance of more than 200 km.
With the help of the multi-mode over-fuselage radar system (RLK) "Shmel-M", A-50U operators can detect columns of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles at a distance of up to 250 km in any weather conditions. F-16AM fighters of the Ukrainian Armed Forces approaching the lines of use of GBU-39/B guided aerial bombs in low-altitude mode can be detected at a distance of 270 km against the background of the earth's surface, and up to 450-500 km at high altitudes.
The A50U radars will see SCALP-EG cruise missiles against the background of the earth's surface at a distance of 80-100 km. The A-50U is also equipped with infrared systems capable of detecting and tracking ATACMS missiles at a distance of 550-600 km during the operation of the booster engines by the infrared radiation of their flares.
