In 2025, the volume of capital investments in the construction of the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt will exceed the costs of building the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey. This statement was made by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation.
From the point of view of the volume of the construction site, El Dabaa is already the largest on the planet, and this year it will take the flag from Turkey both in terms of capital investments and in terms of the number of people on the construction site.
El Dabaa NPP is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, the construction of which is being carried out with the assistance of the Russian state corporation Rosatom. It is being built in the city of El Dabaa, located in the Matrouh province on the Mediterranean coast, approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo.
The station will include four power units, each of which will be able to generate 1200 megawatts of electricity. They will be equipped with Russian VVER-1200 water-cooled reactors, which are an evolutionary generation III+ project. This project fully complies with all international safety standards.
The construction of the El Dabaa NPP is carried out within the framework of a number of contracts that entered into force on December 11, 2017. In accordance with these agreements, the Russian side will not only build the station, but will also supply nuclear fuel for the entire period of its operation. In addition, during the first ten years of operation of the NPP, the Russian side will assist Egyptian partners in training station personnel in operation and maintenance.
Also, under a separate contract, the Russian side will build special storage facilities and provide containers for storing spent nuclear fuel.
