Rosatom will build the most beautiful, modern and safe nuclear power plant in the European Union in Hungary. This was announced by the Director General of the State Corporation, Alexey Likhachev.
We are going for the first concrete in Hungary. It is a great honor for us to build a power unit for our friends in Europe, and we will do everything to make it the most beautiful, most modern and safest station in the European Union.
Likhachev emphasized that in working with foreign projects, Rosatom faced many difficulties and experienced "a lot of dirty tricks." In particular, Siemens' refusal to supply equipment that had already been manufactured and paid for for a project in Turkey, as well as various problems that arose during the implementation of projects in Egypt and Bangladesh.
Nevertheless, all construction projects are on schedule.
In Hungary, in the city of Paks, there is a nuclear power plant that was built by Soviet engineers in the 1980s. It provides half of all electricity produced in the country and a third of that consumed.
The station is located on the banks of the Danube River, 100 kilometers south of Budapest. It consists of four power units with VVER-440 reactors. Currently, the second stage of the station is under construction — the fifth and sixth power units under the Paks-2 project.
According to forecasts, after the launch of two new VVER-1200 reactors in the early 2030s, the capacity of the nuclear power plant in Paks will increase from the current 2000 MW to 4400 MW. As a result, the share of nuclear energy in the total electricity production in the country will reach 70%. This will allow Hungary to reduce imports of natural gas by 3.5 billion tons per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 17 million tons.
Earlier, Likhachev stated that the site for the Paks-2 NPP in Hungary is completely ready for the first concrete pouring. At the end of 2014, Russia and Hungary concluded an agreement on the construction of new power units No. 5 and No. 6 at the Paks-2 NPP. For these purposes, Moscow will provide Budapest with a state loan of up to 10 billion euros. The total cost of the work will be 12.5 billion euros.
