A smartphone is more than just a gadget. Modern devices contain all important applications: banks, government services, mail, social networks, photos, and work chats. But if it falls into the wrong hands, criminals can gain access to all your data. The Department of High-Tech Crimes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has listed reliable ways to protect your smartphone from hacking and theft.
How to protect your smartphone from hacking and theft? Use a complex unlock password – 6+ characters, a PIN is better than a graphic key.
Losing or having your phone stolen can result in more than just financial losses. Attackers can: steal money from your bank, apply for microloans through the "Gosuslugi" portal, access your social media and messenger accounts, use your email to make purchases on marketplaces in installments, find passwords to your crypto wallet in notes on your phone.
How to protect your passwords and data on the Internet:
- Disable auto-saving passwords in your browser. Chrome and Safari store them without additional protection. Use a password manager, such as Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass.
- Do not show SMS on the locked screen. This may allow fraudsters to see verification codes.
- Set up remote lock and data deletion. Enable Find My iPhone or Google Find My Device features.
- Use biometrics to log in to important applications. This could be a fingerprint or Face ID.
And, of course, do not leave your phone unattended! Losing your phone is not just buying a new gadget, but a potential leak of your personal and financial information.
Fraudsters also continue to use tricks associated with updating an account on "Gosuslugi" to gain access to user data. They call Russians and convince them that it is necessary to update their account to ensure security.
