Metallurgists at KMZ have improved the composition of cast iron for the cylinder heads of 6ChSPN 18/22 marine diesel engines, increasing their strength and heat resistance.
The cylinder head is a key element of a diesel engine, ensuring the tightness of the combustion chamber. The efficiency and durability of the engine depend on its resistance to mechanical and thermal loads.
Engineers at SKB-3 KMZ modified the standard SCh20 cast iron by adding 1% copper. This increased the tensile strength by 40%. The addition of 2% nickel increased heat resistance by 60%.
Thanks to these changes, the cylinder heads have become significantly more reliable and durable.
