Strikes Farther and Harder: Tornado-S MLRS Proves Superior to Western Systems

The military cited the range and accuracy of operation as the main advantages of the Tornado-S MLRS

The Russian 300-mm Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) surpasses Western models due to its resistance to any contamination, as well as its range and accuracy. This was stated by the commander of one of the guns with the call sign Trainer.

According to him, the domestic MLRS is more resistant than foreign systems to the effects of various external factors - dirt, dust or water. The Tornado-S combines complex electronics and high operational reliability.

Tornado-S surpasses Western counterparts in ammunition as well. Rockets fly farther, hit more accurately, and strike harder. High-precision ammunition can hit targets at a distance of 120 kilometers, and the circular deviation is no more than seven meters. Thus, unlike its predecessor, the Smerch MLRS, the Tornado-S specialization is the precise destruction of targets, rather than working on large areas, although the latter is also possible.

The 9M544 rocket contains 522 cumulative fragmentation combat elements weighing 240 grams, they penetrate 140 mm of armor. The 9M549 ammunition carries 72 large fragmentation combat elements.
