The use of deepfake calls has become one of the most dangerous methods of fraud. In 2024, VisionLabs estimates that there were tens of thousands of deepfake attacks. Their number is expected to increase tenfold in 2025.
In Russia, the scale of attacks using deepfake technology is much larger than officially reported. The victim may receive a call from a "relative" or the "head" of a company or department. One of the most unexpected threats today is the possibility of creating a real-time deepfake call. Such calls can exert psychological pressure and cause nervous tension.
Deepfakes can appear on various platforms, including social networks, messengers, and video hosting services. According to VisionLabs forecasts, losses from cybercrime could amount to 300 billion rubles in 2024. However, it is quite difficult to determine exactly what part of them falls on deepfakes.
Earlier www1.ru reported that criminal liability may be introduced in Russia for deepfakes. Cybercriminals use neural networks and artificial intelligence to create fake videos, voice recordings, and images of citizens. The materials are then used for extortion and other types of crimes.
