On Sunday morning, December 29, a powerful flare occurred on the Sun, reaching class X. This was reported by the head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS), Sergei Bogachev.
According to him, the event began at 10:08 Moscow time. The peak of radiation was recorded at 10:18, the explosive phase lasted more than half an hour.
Solar activity has been growing for about a week, but a powerful flare has only occurred now. The preliminary score of the event is X1.1.
Bogachev clarified that the explosion occurred in an area of possible impact on the Earth. Moderate magnetic storms are likely from December 31 to January 1.
