The Borei-A project submarines are a double-hulled submarine: missile silos, a reactor, a crew, and turbines are located in a strong hull capable of withstanding high water pressure. Outside is a "light" hull that gives the submarine a streamlined shape.

The ship is armed with the D-30 missile system - launchers for Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, and is equipped with torpedo tubes.
