Видеохостинги и борьба с пиратством: как обстоит ситуация в России

"VK Video" Increased Removal of Illegal Content

The administration of the "VK Video" platform is actively combating pirated content, receiving approximately 15,000 requests from copyright holders each month. As a result, up to 250,000 units of pirated content are removed.

Sergey Lyadzhin, Technical Director of the "Social Platforms and Media Content" business group at VK, noted that authors and copyright holders can report disputed content through the DMCA system. The platform also operates an AI-based Content ID system designed to work with digital fingerprints of video and audio files.

Unlike "VK Video", the Nuum service did not provide data on the number of requests regarding pirated content. A representative of the platform assured that all complaints are processed as usual, and content that violates the rights of the copyright holder is removed within 24 hours. RuTube did not respond to a request about its practice of removing pirated content.

Anti-Piracy Memorandum

Copyright holders and search engines signed an anti-piracy memorandum on November 1, 2018. It is designed to strengthen the fight against the distribution of illegal video content. The memorandum involves creating a registry of links to pages with pirated video and obliges the removal of links to these resources from search results.

Last year, Roskomnadzor included representatives of the book and music industries in the memorandum, but the results of this step have not yet met expectations.

Increase in Pirated Content in Russia

According to media market analysts, after the departure of Western copyright holders such as Sony and Warner, the amount of pirated content on Russian video services has increased significantly. This has become an "absolutely expected" phenomenon, and now foreign films often appear on hosting platforms faster than with organizers of "pre-screening services."

According to analytical companies MUSO and Kearney, Russia ranked third in traffic to pirate sites, accounting for 6% of total pirated content consumption worldwide. The number of registered visits to such resources in 2023 increased by approximately 10% compared to the previous year.

Thus, the situation with pirated content on video hosting platforms remains relevant, and platforms continue to seek ways to combat copyright infringement.
