This became known following a meeting held by the Aide to the President of Russia, Chairman of the Marine Board of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI). Representatives of Roshydromet were also present at the meeting.
In order to effectively develop the Arctic and preserve the fragile northern nature, it is necessary to improve the quality of observations obtained in the existing marine coastal hydrometeorological network. Accurate forecasts of the ice situation and the maintenance and development of the Russian orbital group of remote sensing satellites are important for ensuring the safety of the Northern Sea Route.
The Chairman of the Marine Board noted that Russia needs to create an effective system of hydrometeorological support for maritime activities. The system will include the restoration and development of observations at marine coastal stations of the hydrometeorological network, the development of automatic and autonomous technical means, systems for monitoring the characteristics of the marine environment, means for processing and analyzing information, methods and models for calculating hydrometeorological characteristics of the marine environment, including ice conditions.
In addition, Patrushev touched upon the issues of studying permafrost, which are related to the ice situation. Currently, AARI is creating a State system for background monitoring of permafrost. By the end of next year, 140 observation points will be set up on the territory of permafrost occurrence in Russia, and about half of them are already in operation. Boreholes transmit information to the AARI Permafrost Monitoring Center.
