Footage of the main Russian battle tank T-80BV with an improvised set of additional protection in the form of an anti-drone "barbecue" and chain "screens" has appeared on the Web. But not all of these elements provide reliable protection against HEAT shells, said military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, the "barbecue" above the turret provides a sufficiently high level of protection for the upper projection of the tank from FPV drones with cumulative warheads in the angular sector from 0 to +70 degrees.
The joint between the lower and upper frontal parts is covered by two strips of backward-oriented track tracks. In combination with the tracks, the equivalent resistance of the lower frontal part to kinetic shells increases from 200 to 270 mm, and to cumulative shells - from 200 to 300 - 350 mm.
Small chains on the elements of the 4S20 dynamic protection "Kontakt-1" overlap the turret ring, providing early initiation of monoblock cumulative warheads of rocket-propelled grenades to defocus cumulative jets. The effectiveness of these chain "screens" is very doubtful against powerful tandem cumulative warheads used in the BGM-71E ATGMs of the TOW-2E complexes.
