Footage of the main Russian battle tank T-80BV with an improvised set of additional protection in the form of an anti-drone "barbecue" and chain "screens" has appeared online. But not all of these elements provide reliable protection against HEAT projectiles, military expert Evgeny Damantsev noted.
According to him, the "barbecue" above the turret provides a sufficiently high level of protection for the upper projection of the tank from FPV drones with HEAT warheads in the elevation sector from 0 to +70 degrees.
The joint between the lower and upper frontal parts is covered by two strips of reversely oriented track links. In combination with the tracks, the equivalent resistance of the lower frontal part to kinetic projectiles increases from 200 to 270 mm, and to cumulative projectiles - from 200 to 300 - 350 mm.
Small chains on the elements of the 4S20 dynamic protection "Kontakt-1" overlap the turret ring, providing early initiation of monoblock HEAT warheads of rocket-propelled grenades to defocus HEAT jets. The effectiveness of these chain "screens" against powerful tandem HEAT warheads used in the BGM-71E ATGMs of the TOW-2E complexes is very doubtful.
