В ТПУ усовершенствовали мезотомограф для исследования горных пород

The device can now obtain twice as much data on rocks and process information in a matter of seconds

Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), together with the Tomsk Scientific Research Institute of Oil and Gas (TomskNIPIneft, part of Rosneft), have modernized the mesotomograph. It is used to study the internal structure of rock samples. The device is capable of obtaining twice as much useful information and processing data in a matter of seconds.

The main advantage of the new version is that it is now possible to conduct research on both full-size and standard core samples. At the same time, the resolution for core analysis has been doubled, which will allow obtaining more accurate characteristics of the samples.
Alexey Gogolev, Vice-Rector for Science and Strategic Projects at TPU

It should be reminded that the mesotomograph allows for X-ray tomography of a full-size core – a cylindrical rock sample that is extracted from the earth's interior using specialized equipment. With the help of the mesotomograph, it is possible to study in detail the pore structure of the reservoir being developed and create a digital 3D model of the core. This will allow TomskNIPIneft specialists to choose the optimal oil production technologies.

Neural network algorithms have been implemented in the software of the updated mesotomograph. This will significantly reduce the processing time of tomographic data: manually, this process takes from a week to a month, and with the new software developed at TPU, from several minutes to several hours. The software and elements of the modernized device are patented.
