The radiology department of the Professor O.V. Vladimirtsev Regional Clinical Hospital in Khabarovsk actively uses artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which has significantly reduced mortality from vascular diseases. The introduction of innovative medical technologies is part of the national project "Healthcare." Thanks to the use of AI, the hospital has managed to reduce mortality from vascular diseases by more than 30% over the past four years.
According to the acting chief physician of the clinical hospital, Alexander Kalashnikov, AI has become an essential part of the digitalization of healthcare and a key global trend in medicine. He emphasized that the AI system was actively used during the COVID-19 infection period to diagnose lung damage, and in recent years — to diagnose diseases of the brain, including ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
"The accuracy of diagnosis using AI reaches over 95%. These are programs that do not get tired, do not make mistakes, and provide great assistance to our doctors," Kalashnikov noted.
All brain scans performed in the radiology department are processed using the AI system. This high-precision system allows you to quickly obtain examination results, make the correct diagnosis, and carry out surgical treatment in a timely manner, which can save a patient's life. Previously, radiologists needed a lot of time to analyze images in order not to miss a stroke. With the introduction of AI, this process has accelerated, helping not only experienced specialists, but also young doctors undergoing training.
The head of the radiology department, Anton Polyakov, noted that the AI system helps to identify changes in brain scans, which significantly speeds up diagnosis and helps patients receive the necessary assistance as soon as possible. More than 20,000 brain studies are performed annually in the department, all of which are first processed using AI and then analyzed by a doctor. The hospital's emergency room receives more than 5,500 patients with suspected acute cerebrovascular accident.
To improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment, according to the regional Ministry of Health, modern equipment was supplied to the clinical hospital under the national project, including a computed tomograph, an angiographic unit, and a magnetic resonance tomograph. The latter is used for MRI examination of the heart. The medical institution plans to expand the use of AI in medicine, including a meeting with specialists from the speech technology center to discuss additional opportunities for using artificial intelligence. Doctors are already actively using the recently introduced voice assistant, which understands complex medical terms and can translate oral speech into written form. This assistant significantly speeds up the work of specialists when describing X-rays, and is also being tested in the field of functional diagnostics and cardiology.
