A quantum cascade laser has been created at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). The device will speed up the development of electronics, according to the university's press service.
The new quantum cascade laser differs from its counterparts in its design. Such devices generate beams of terahertz waves, but quickly heat up to dangerously high temperatures. The developers managed to solve this problem.
The laser's efficiency was improved by using two photons and two quantum transitions to generate radiation.
Here I would like to highlight our colleagues from the Ioffe Institute, who managed to grow layer by layer 160 transition-amplifying modules, each of which contains four quantum wells with layer thicknesses from 3 to 7 nanometers. The duration of the growth of such complex structures exceeds 10 hours, and during this time it is necessary to maintain the thickness and composition of the semiconductor layers with an accuracy of 1-2%.
The scientists managed to ensure that the devices began to generate milliwatt terahertz beams in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. In the future, this will allow the development of data transmission systems for space probes and new types of emitters for medical devices.
