«Прогресс МС-28» второй раз за неделю спас МКС от столкновения с космическим мусором

ISS Orbit Increased by Almost 500 Meters Again

Roscosmos announced the successful avoidance of space debris by the ISS thanks to the Russian cargo ship «Progress MS-28».

According to TsNIImash, at 12:49 Moscow time, the engines of the «Progress MS-28» spacecraft were activated, which operated for 211.96 seconds and delivered an impulse of 0.3 m/s, which allowed increasing the ISS orbit by approximately 500 meters. After the avoidance maneuver, the station's orbital period was 92.85 minutes, the orbital inclination was 51.66 degrees, the average orbital altitude was 416.99 km, the minimum was 417.81 km, and the maximum was 430.40 km.

The Russian space freighter already saved the ISS from a space accident and collision with debris less than a week ago, on November 20. Then, the ISS orbit was increased by about 800 meters with its help.

In general, the ISS orbit has had to be adjusted 370 times during its existence. Orbit correction is done not only to avoid crashing into space debris, but also to prepare for docking with cargo ships before their arrival from Earth.
