The newest American mobile ground-based anti-missile system for high-altitude exoatmospheric interception of medium-range missiles, THAAD, will not be able to intercept the Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile. This was pointed out by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
He noted that technically, the high-potential multifunctional X-band AESA radars AN/TPY-2 based on 25344 transceiver modules of THAAD anti-missile systems are capable of detecting RS-26 warheads at a distance of about 500 - 700 km.
But it will be extremely difficult for THAAD interceptors to counter maneuvering warheads after the separation of the multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle. A "trail" of mass-dimensional mock-ups, IR traps, and IR aerosols will follow the warheads, while the time window until the moment of descent below the Karman line will be minimal — no more than 10 seconds.
Initially, the military expert described the RS-26 Rubezh missile based on its characteristics, but it turned out to be "Oreshnik", which was presented by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the evening of November 21.
Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that the military had already used the missile in a non-nuclear hypersonic configuration. According to him, the missiles attack targets at a speed of 2-3 km per second, about 10 Mach.
