Ministry of Digital Development Considers Banning SMS During Calls to Combat Fraudsters

New measures to combat telephone scammers

The Ministry of Digital Development of Russia is discussing with telecom operators the possibility of banning SMS messages during calls. The measure is aimed at protecting confidential information and preventing fraud with confirmation codes, said the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadaev.

The head of the department clarified that the ban could be implemented through network settings of operators so that SMS messages are delivered only after the call is completed. This mechanism is planned to be included in a package of 30 anti-fraud measures, which in the future may be enshrined at the legislative level.

Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Development Alexander Shoitov added that it is planned to create a unified system for combating cyber fraud within the framework of the national project "Data Economy", which will start in 2025.

The platform can be integrated with the protection systems of operators of communication and banks. In the future, it will be able to deal with fraudulent calls in messengers and deepfakes.
