The Kingisepp Machine-Building Plant (KMZ) military-industrial holding has developed a technology for casting an aluminum blower wheel used in the 10D100 diesel generator (the generator is installed on TE10 locomotives), the holding's press service reported.
10D100 is a two-stroke vertical ten-cylinder engine with opposed pistons, direct fuel injection, water cooling and straight-flow scavenging.
The holding's press service explained that the blower is used to supply air to the cylinders and remove exhaust gases from them.
According to Daria Kireeva, a process engineer at SCB-3 (part of KMZ), the challenge was in casting blades with a thickness of up to 2 mm with a casting weight of over 20 kg. This could only be done by investment casting in a vacuum.
We have developed a technology using special channels in the ceramic mold that allow each blade to be fed with metal during the casting process. Thanks to this solution, we were able to produce castings without a single defect.
