Attackers are using spyware that can intercept bank card data and incoming SMS codes

The «Mammoth» scheme is gaining popularity again among criminals. In the past, attackers used this scheme to steal money and obtain information about bank cards. They posed as employees of popular online stores and offered to place an order with delivery.

The application may contain hidden spyware that can intercept bank card data and incoming SMS messages. This allows attackers to carry out unauthorized transactions with the money of Russians.

The department clarified that attackers called their victims «mammoths». The first cases of using this scheme were recorded in the summer of 2019. Fraudsters fraudulently gained access to funds and bank card data of their victims, posing as employees of marketplaces and promising to place an order and deliver the goods.

Earlier, a new method of fraud appeared in Russia that uses neural networks. Now, attackers not only disguise themselves as police or bank employees, but also actively call Russians on behalf of their deceased relatives, as if from the afterlife.
