Aided by the low infrared signature of the aircraft engine body

Footage of an unsuccessful attempt to eliminate the Russian kamikaze drone "Geran-2" has gone viral online. It was allegedly targeted with either a FIM-92B guided anti-aircraft missile from the "Stinger" MANPADS or a Polish "Piorun" SAM.

Military expert Evgeny Damantsev clarified that the "Geran's" ability to evade defeat was aided by the low infrared signature of the MD550 aircraft four-cylinder rotary-piston engine body.

He noted that AGR-20 (APKWS-II) tactical missiles, which are part of the L3Harris "Vampire" missile systems and equipped with semi-automatic laser-beam guidance systems, are also used against this type of UAV.

This type of control system is characterized by extremely high noise immunity with adequate meteorological visibility range (MVR), but loses effectiveness in complex meteorological conditions.
