Scientists at Voronezh State University have developed a new method for obtaining collagen from fish skin. This substance is used in the production of cosmetics, in medicine, and in the food industry, according to the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
The ministry added that specialists have already received a patent for their development.
The university said that collagen is a connective tissue protein. In the human body, its level decreases with aging. This makes the skin less elastic and causes wrinkles.
Stages of collagen production technology
Voronezh scientists clean the skin of fish from fins, skeletal remains, and sterilize it at a low temperature. Then it is treated with a solution that includes alkali and hydrogen peroxide.
After washing, the skin is placed in a weak solution with organic acid and treated with ultrasound. This separates the proteins from other skin components.
Liquid is removed from the resulting raw material and distilled water is added. This mass is filtered and sterilized with ultraviolet light. As a result, the entire technological process takes several hours.
