Olga Skorobogatova, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, has proposed allowing Russian banks to collect customer biometrics into the Unified Biometric System (UBS) in their applications. She explained that this would require improving the legislative framework (Federal Law No. 572).
Currently, biometric data can be submitted either at a bank office or through the special "Gosuslugi Biometrics" application. Skorobogatova's proposal was supported by the UBS operator and the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation. Sberbank also positively assessed the proposal of the Central Bank representative.
Other market participants stated that collecting biometrics in offices is time-consuming and expensive. On the other hand, the data obtained is reliably protected.
In the case of a mobile application, the question arises about information security. Hackers may try to break into this biometric collection channel, they added.
