Specialists from the State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) have begun testing experimental new generation generators for the synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals (medicinal products that contain radioactive chemical elements - radioisotopes), the corporation's press service reported.
An experimental batch of gallium-68 generators was manufactured at the Khlopin Radium Institute.
Preparations based on gallium-68 (used in medicine to visualize tumors) are needed for the diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors, prostate cancer, and myocardial perfusion. With its help, you can get the most accurate result when conducting positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography.
According to Konstantin Vergazov, Director of the Radium Institute, the uniqueness of the generators lies in the sorbent, which allows obtaining a pure product. The first generators will be sent for interlaboratory testing to one of the medical centers in Moscow.
