Yonhap, citing a report from South Korea's Defense Intelligence Agency, reported that North Korea has begun construction of a large nuclear submarine. TMZ suggested that Russia helped North Korea implement this project.
It is known that in September 2023, North Korea commissioned its first submarine with a diesel-electric power plant, the "Hero Kim Kun Ok." At the time, Western media wrote that the submarine could be nuclear-powered. However, this information was not confirmed.
The War Zone suggested that the "hand of the Kremlin" helped North Korea obtain nuclear technology to build such a submarine.
North Korea's ability to build a nuclear submarine is certainly questionable, although Moscow could have provided Pyongyang with the relevant technology and expertise.
The technical specifications of the "Hero Kim Kun Ok" submarine are classified. It is only known that it carries torpedo and missile weapons. At the same time, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has announced plans to modernize all heavy submarines, equipping them with tactical nuclear weapons.
