The Kalashnikov Concern will begin serial production of the small-sized 5.45-mm AM-17 assault rifle in 2025. It has been improved taking into account operational combat experience on the front lines. The AM-17 assault rifle will replace the AKS-74U assault rifle, which was adopted in 1979.
Kalashnikov noted that the main highlight of the assault rifle is the widespread use of high-strength polymer materials in it, including in the design of the receiver. This technical solution made it possible to use a two-way fire mode switch, a folding telescopic stock, a Picatinny rail, and a cocking handle that can be installed on both sides of the barrel.
Structurally, the AM-17 assault rifle consists of a receiver with a stock and barrel, a forend, and a trigger box. The receiver houses the bolt carrier with the bolt, the locking unit, and the return mechanism.
The trigger box includes a magazine well and a control handle, as well as a trigger mechanism. The receiver and trigger box are connected to each other by transverse latches that are removed when disassembling the assault rifle.
