Both Canadian frigates are designed for anti-submarine warfare. They are equipped with modern sonar systems and weapons.

The Improved Kilo-class submarine (Project 636.3 "Varshavyanka", NATO designation Improved Kilo) is one of Russia's most advanced non-nuclear submarines. It is known for its ultra-quiet operation, especially in shallow or coastal waters.

Submarines of this class have low-noise propellers. Kilos are equipped with six 533-mm torpedo tubes that launch torpedoes and Kalibr cruise missiles.
