Russian activity on VK and Telegram has significantly increased. MegaFon has increased the bandwidth of direct connections with these services, which has reduced content latency and improved user experience.
As of August 2024, VK accounts for 15.3% of mobile internet traffic, which is 3.2 percentage points higher compared to August 2022. Telegram has shown an even more significant increase: its share has grown from 5.3% to 11%, allowing it to surpass TikTok in the fall of 2023 and take second place in terms of traffic volume. TikTok's share has decreased to 6.3%, losing 3.9 percentage points over the same period. Kinopoisk accounts for 5.6% (an increase of 0.9 pp), and WhatsApp accounts for 2.8% (an increase of 1 pp). The share of Odnoklassniki has fallen to 1.9%.
To cope with the increasing load, MegaFon has modernized its transport infrastructure, increasing the bandwidth of connections with Telegram by 14% and with VK by 12%.
Andrey Krishtofovich, Director of the Transport Network Development Department at MegaFon, noted that this has improved the stability of the services and reduced latency when watching videos, which in turn has improved the quality of streaming content.
