The Japanese Ministry of Defense reported that on September 23, a Russian military patrol aircraft Il-38 violated the country's airspace three times in the area of Rebun Island (45 km from the northwest coast of Hokkaido). This is reported by Defence blog.
The Russian aircraft, identified as a maritime patrol Il-38, entered Japanese airspace for one minute the first time, then for 30 seconds the second time, and for one minute the third time.
In response, the Japanese Air Force command scrambled F-15 and F-35 fighters, which transmitted several radio warnings to the Il-38 crew. The Japanese aircraft also launched illumination flares.
This is the first time Japan has used illumination flares to suppress airspace violations.
As Defence blog writes, citing Western analysts, the Il-38 was allegedly patrolling the airspace and deploying hydroacoustic buoys, thereby the pilot could detect a Japanese Navy submarine in the area.
