The United States claims that fighters from a secret unit of the Russian Ministry of Defense — the Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (the so-called "underwater special forces of the Navy", which is not listed in the structure of the Russian Ministry of Defense on the website) use various ships, submarines and marine drones for their operations.

Specialized submarines under the command of GUGI are capable of descending to a depth of 2,500 meters. The Russian research vessel "Yantar", spotted near cables off the coast of Great Britain in 2019, is associated with GUGI.

According to Army Recognition, underwater cables form the basis of the global Internet and telecommunications network, stretching for thousands of kilometers along the ocean floor, including between Europe and North America. Any sabotage could lead to serious economic consequences.

NATO sources also stated that over the past decade, more than 160 Russian ships have been spotted performing nearly 1,000 suspicious actions near underwater cables in the North Sea.

About the ship "Yantar"

The oceanographic research vessel "Yantar" is the lead ship of Project 22010 "Kruys" built at the Baltic Shipyard "Yantar". It is designed to explore the World Ocean. The ship is equipped with deep-sea manned and autonomous underwater vehicles that can dive to a depth of up to 6 km.
